What is DDI?

Dernière Demeure Internationale (DDI) is a non-profit organization that works for mutual aid and solidarity among its members. Its main purpose is to help its members benefit from assistance in the event of death, which reduces the financial burden on loved ones and allows them to experience grief with less stress.

Why DDI?

DDI provides a practical solution to a problem faced by immigrant families in North America and the West. Families are poorly informed and less prepared about the dying process. They have no funeral prearrangement and are unable to deal with death when it occurs. In addition, health is affected when in a bereavement situation. We are unable to cope with the consequences that this entails: the pain of separation, the management of administrative procedures, the payment of bills, etc. We come out of this situation with consequences (pain, stress, anxiety, debt, etc.). Disadvantaged families are the most affected. DDI provides them with all the support they need while remaining faithful to its values, which are impartiality, respect, transparency and solidarity.

How does DDI work?

DDI has a particular operating model based on the law of large numbers. When a death occurs within its network, it launches a fundraiser that will cover the funeral expenses. Contributions decrease as the number of subscribers increases. So to enable the payment to be made within a very short time (72 hours), each member must permanently constitute a provision of funds equivalent to at least the amount due for a case. Each member must also agree to replenish this fund as a security deposit to cover an event. Each member agrees to pay an annual fee to cover the fixed charges generated by activities for the benefit of our community. This contribution is defined by the Board of Directors and can be revised by it according to the needs that arise. Once registered, the member must respect a waiting period ranging from 3 months to 6 months depending on age.

How it works

A model built on the law of large numbers: every death is funded by a small contribution from the whole network.

  1. Step 1

    You join an account

A family, an association or a group of friends opens an account and registers its members.

  2. Step 2

    A death occurs

The manager declares the death. DDI confirms it, then calls for contributions across the whole network.

  3. Step 3

    The family is supported

The benefit is paid to cover funeral costs, within 72 hours.

Objectives

The psychosocial and financial health of our community matters to us.

  1. PROVIDER

a lasting solution to the problem of funeral management within black communities in the diaspora.

  2. PRESERVE

the dignity of members by ensuring that their remains are treated with consideration and that their last wishes are respected.

  3. LIGHTEN

the financial burden of the family directly experienced by calling on the whole community to contribute.

  4. ENCOURAGE

old and new arrivals to break out of isolation for better social integration, to increase living together and strengthen solidarity.

  5. REUNITE

a large number of members in order to diversify services through projects that will increase the potential of our community.

  6. DEVELOP

the spirit of solidarity and sharing favorable to the socio-economic development of our community

01

Positive impact on the community

DDI is there to help all grieving families, particularly the AFRICAN diaspora. In addition, all actions aim to represent the culture of black peoples, to remove barriers and stereotypes, to preserve the dignity of those who leave this world, to strengthen the security of families who have to manage bereavement, to improve living conditions and well-being through the participation of all.

02

Support for change and an inclusive society

DDI is the only global organization that helps its members WITHOUT ethnic or territorial DISTINCTION. It is the only one that brings together all the communities, especially the black communities. To join this organization is to contribute to something bigger to change public paradigms and eliminate racial inequalities. Any member is an undeniable ally of living together and a propellant of global ethnocultural diversity.

03

Opportunity for visibility and privileges

DDI is a network that includes more than 30 African countries. Membership allows you to join a huge account, share experiences and build a strong and thriving community together. DDI also offers the member the privilege of benefiting from support in the event of death, a right to participate in general meetings and a right of eligibility for governance bodies.

04

Support a good cause

Around the world, the black community is one of the vulnerable, racialized communities that are too often victims of social injustice. DDI takes its advancement seriously and is committed in its own way to working for things to change.

05

Volunteer involvement

DDI offers members the opportunity to get involved on a voluntary basis. It is thanks to the generosity of certain members that the organization has managed to rise among the Canadian organizations of reference. As a result, it continues to encourage volunteer action and is committed to supporting its volunteers.
